Partnerships of the Rwanda HIV/AIDS Healthcare Initiative

By Elizabeth Styffe

The Rwanda HIV/AIDS Healthcare Initiative is a new and innovative approach to healthcare which uses local churches to increase access to health services.  It is the single most significant P.E.A.C.E. Plan initiative which is saving lives and transforming healthcare delivery using the local Church.

Driven by innovative partnerships, the Rwanda HIV/AIDS Healthcare Initiative is an opportunity for people to both go, and give financially to a life-changing P.E.A.C.E. endeavor unlike anything previously done in Rwandan healthcare.

This is accomplished by:

1. Training lay people in Rwandan churches to provide basic health care and linking them to existing health systems, including launching church based clinics.

2.  Increasing the capacity and skills of Rwandan nurses and physicians, offering training and collaborative partnerships.

3. Improving existing health care facilities.

The Initiative is being realized through the efforts and innovation of the P.E.A.C.E. Plan, Rwanda Churches, Saddleback Valley Community Church and dynamic partnerships with the Rwandan Government, Minster of HIV and other P.E.A.C.E. Plan partners.

The goal of this Initiative is to implement a new model of healthcare delivery in Rwanda’s western region known as Kibuye which can be reproduced throughout Rwanda and other countries. A Church based and Church initiated model of healthcare delivery is being developed with an emphasis on measurable outcomes of improved access and quality care.

Distinguishing Characteristics

1.  Church Congregation Mobilization

2.  Indigenous Leadership and Local Relationships

3.  Extensive Collaboration, Expert Implementers and Extensive Experience

4.  Proven Methods, Scalable and Reproducible Models

5.  New Healthcare Distribution Channels using the Church to increase access to care, deliver better care, and enhance infrastructure to maximize current technology and structures in resource-limited settings.

Relationships have been developed and nurtured to facilitate reproducing this model in a nationwide initiative utilizing the 200 pastors who have received training for the past two years. Saddleback has also trained 75 pastors from the four bordering countries of Congo, Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi.

Your Donations

In Rwanda, the life expectancy is just 43 years.  There is only one physician for every 42,000 people.  Access to healthcare is virtually non-existent for most Rwandans, and the standard of care is below what Rwandans want and need.  The Rwandan HIV/AIDS Healthcare Initiative is a plan to re-invent healthcare by training local churches to provide basic treatment to community members and to link those churches with clinics and hospitals.  The goal is to provide increased access to care.

Financial contributions will be used to:

1. Make capital improvements and purchase needed equipment for three hospitals

2. Provide training to hospital staff and the staff of twenty one clinics supporting the three hospitals

3. Train over 700 churches to mobilize their members to become healthcare providers in the community.
